So I’ve had a PS3 for a while and I kept hearing about installing another OS. After some reading I decided to take the PS3 linux plunge. I went with Ubuntu 9.04. The install process wasn’t that hard, but I made a few decisions that slowed me down.

First of all, you need to use the alternate install image for PS3 and not the desktop image. The desktop version froze every time when attempting the install. I wasn’t trying to boot a the live option since I already heard that had issues. No matter what I did I just saw a black screen after I chose an option. I tried several boot loaders too, but I’m back to the stock kboot. I had hopes for a gui boot loader with sixaxis support. Not needing a keyboard for every boot sounds great but it just wasn’t working right. It is still in alpha though. Once loaded I suggest checking out the psubuntu site for speed tips (ie making use of PS3′s vram). When people say it can be slow they’re not kidding. It depends what you’re doing I guess. If you’re just opening Firefox and browsing around it works great. If you try to multitask, it slowed down noticeably, but still not to the point that it was unbearable. It is just an adjustment from using a real PC as opposed to a system optimized for gaming. I thought it would be cool for web tv/movies sites, but I think I may either be totally wrong or just need some tweaks to buffering. I don’t know since it is still too new for me.

It has been fun and I’m just starting to discover the possibilities with having a PC on my HD TV. Maybe I just like the excitement of doing it because it can be done.

News of Android phones coming to Verizon will keep me a subscriber for sure.

This has to be the best news I’ve heard today. I just stumbled across some news that Verizon is working with Motorola to release Android OS phones later this year. Finally, Verizon will have some competition for phones like the iPhone and G1. I can only hope this means an end to my continued disappointment with Verizon’s app selection.

Maybe I’ve felt limited because I chose an LG Dare and didn’t want to wander into the realms of Windows Mobile or Blackberry phone. Even those phones/PDA’s aren’t in the same league, though. While I was obsessed with my phone when it first came out, eventually after realizing I couldn’t get any useful or fun apps, it got old fast. The Joneses were kicking my ass. Is it the proprietary BREW OS or just BREW in general? Did Verizon run out of BREW developers? I didn’t see any other phones in the Verizon arsenal that were any better either. Same apps, different phone.

I wanted to be amongst the iPhoners who seemed to have new app/game options everyday. I even went so far as to plan out my escape to AT&T by saving a cart at the Apple online store with the iPhone, plan and accessories I was going to purchase. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been with Verizon for probably over 10 years now and their service and coverage are great. That has to be the biggest reason why I wouldn’t want to leave. Now with phones like the Motorola Calgary (along with the Palm Pre and maybe even iPhone) on the way to Verizon, I think I can stay right where I am. I am so relieved.

So I'm on Twitter and Facebook. What next?

So I’m on Twitter and Facebook. Who isn’t? I even have two MySpace pages that have all but wasted away from neglect. I can’t help but think, now what?

‘Why not start a blog?’ I say to myself. Every once in a while I have an inner dialog dying to get out. No amount of link sharing, retweeting or posting of witty statuses can appease these voices. What better way to unleash the noise within than to post it on the web for all to see. Various bite size bits nonsense all tagged, dated and ready to be enjoyed.

I also couldn’t help but be intrigued by the idea that I could connect my blog feed to Twitter, Facebook, etc. I’m a sucker for this sort of mashup/integration. So here I am. Blogging. We’ll see how it goes.
